What does a chirotherapist do?
Chirotherapists treat blockages and dysfunctions of the spine, joints and extremities as part of pain therapy. They focus on the effects of complaints and treatment on the entire musculoskeletal system.
Chirotherapist or chiropractor?
Only doctors – often orthopaedic surgeons – can undergo additional training to become a chirotherapist. This means: Only a doctor with the relevant training can identify as a ‘chirotherapist’. Chirotherapy or manual medicine / chirotherapy is part of classical orthodox medicine.
Chirotherapists are often confused with chiropractors. In Germany, chiropractic treatment techniques may be carried out by alternative practitioners and doctors.
What do chirotherapists treat?
The interaction between individual components of the musculoskeletal system can be disturbed. This results in tension, blockages, pain and bad posture, for example:
- Back pain
- Shoulder and arm pain
- Hip and knee pain
- Teeth grinding
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Migraine
- Tinnitus
- Numbness
Arthritis (joint inflammation) and arthrosis (joint wear) often cause pain in other parts of the body. Diseases of internal organs can also spread to the spine. Chirotherapists can relieve pain through treatment, but not treat the cause.
Chirotherapeutic treatment options
Before treatment, chirotherapists inspect blockages and hardenings with their hands. This allows them to analyse pain points and movement restrictions. Examples of treatment techniques:
Manipulation: Fast targeted pulse of motion on a joint in a specific direction.
Mobilisation: Improving joint play by activating muscles and their counterparts. For better blood circulation, relaxation and pain relief for hard and painful points.
Neuromuscular technique: For regulating the tension of the nervous system and the muscles. This involves, for example, a special deep massage of the muscle and the muscle sheaths (fasciae) under pressure or with hand movements.
