What is an internist?

An internist focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases. They carries out many treatments themselves, but also refer patients to special medical practices, such as angiologists (vascular specialists) or rheumatologists.

What does the internist examine and treat?

An internist has a large area of responsibility. They specialise in the prevention, recognition, treatment and rehabilitation of diseases of the following body systems:

  • Metabolism and hormones (endocrinology, diabetology):
    Hormone disorders and metabolic diseases such as gout, osteoporosis, hyper- or hypothyroidism and diabetes
  • Vascular system (angiology): 
    vascular diseases such as varicose veins, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and other diseases related to arteries, capillaries, veins and lymph vessels
  • Bone structure and connective tissue (rheumatology): 
    Connective and supporting tissue diseases such as rheumatism, fibrosis, sclerosis and scurvy
  • Digestive organs (gastroenterology):
    Gastro-intestinal diseases and other digestive disorders
  • Blood and blood-forming organs (haematology / oncology): 
    Diseases of blood-forming organs, leukaemia or blood cancer
  • Heart and circulation (cardiology):
    Cardiovascular diseases
  • Kidney and the urinary tract (nephrology):
    Kidney and urinary tract diseases, for example inflammation of the kidney such as pyelonephritis, kidney stones or tumours, and acute or chronic kidney failure
  • Respiratory organs (pneumology):
    Lung and respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and pneumonia
